Obama to invite 47 African leaders for summit  print

President Barack Obama will invite 47 leaders to a landmark US-Africa summit in August, seeking to widen US trade, development and security ties with an increasingly dynamic continent to which he traces part of his ancestry.
Obama will send out invites to all African nations that are currently in good standing with the United States or are not suspended from the African Union — meaning there will be no place for states like Egypt or Zimbabwe.
Obama will hold the talks on August 5 and 6, seeking to cement progress from his trip to Africa last year.
A White House statement said the trip would “advance the administration’s focus on trade and investment in Africa, and highlight America’s commitment to Africa’s security, its democratic development, and its

people.”
The idea for the summit, which takes place with Washington increasingly aware of China’s attempt to enhance its diplomatic profile in Africa, was first announced by Obama in a speech in Cape Town in June.
Egypt, which has caused the Obama administration to thread a foreign policy needle with an erstwhile ally after a military takeover, is not eligible to attend as it is currently suspended from the African Union.
The United States maintains sanctions against the Zimbabwean government of Robert Mugabe and key officials over suppression of democracy and what Washington sees as politically motivated violence.
Other notable absentees on the invite list include Sudan and Madagascar.
One notable inclusion is Kenya, where President Uhuru Kenyatta is currently awaiting a delayed trial at the International Criminal Court on charges related to violence after an election in 2007 that left 1,000 people dead.
The indictment has been one of the reasons why Obama is yet to visit the homeland of his late father as president.
But Obama has spoken to Kenyatta on the telephone, and the Kenyan leader has enjoyed more interaction with the outside world since a massacre at the Westgate Mall in Nairobi in September claimed by Somalia’s Al-Qaeda-linked Shebab insurgents.

Deinde Fernandez’s Daughter Hopes To Be New Rihanna  print

Abimbola ‘Bim’ Fernandez, daughter of Nigerian billionaire, Deinde Fernandez, has got her sight on being the next Rihanna. The Nigerian heiress, whose father is said to be one of the world’s wealthiest men has celebrated the release of her first single by sitting down for an interview with the New York Post.
The 24-year-old, who is based in New York, told the paper that she has embarked on her career without the help of her dad, who is reportedly worth a staggering $8.7 billion.
She however admitted that he gives her a hefty monthly allowance which pays for her luxury Manhattan apartment among other living expenses.
Speaking from her New York City home, which is flanked by original artworks by Picasso and Dr Seuss, she said: ‘I think that, unfortunately, everyone’s perception of socialites has been pretty accurate so far, which is what I want to change.’

Her first single ‘Let’s Take It Naked’ was released today on SMH Records’ site, with an iTunes roll-out expected soon. She cites Rihanna as one of her biggest musical inspirations. “Money can’t buy a record deal,’ she said of her situation. ‘It can’t buy good music. You can either sing or you can’t.”
A song about nakedness is perhaps a little more explicit than what one would expect from a well-heeled socialite, but she says that ‘it’s not even that racy of a song! “It’s very poppy, like, “I think you’re cute! Do you like me? So let’s get naked!” I want it to be that song where it’s like, “Turn that song on! Let’s get ready! Let’s do shots!”
Her record label says she has not put any of her own money into the music project. She comes from unorthodox beginnings. Her family counted Nelson Mandela and Kofi Annan as good friends.
Her father, 80, owns four residences: A mansion in Larchmont, New York (where she also resides), a home in Brussels, a Palace in Nigeria, and a French chateau that was once owned by Napoleon.
Deinde Fernandez is apparently transported between each of his homes on one of his three private jets. He made his fortune by operating a series of diamond and gold mines across the Central African Republic, and is notably reclusive for fear of abduction and robbery.
He is so private that blog entries written about him across the internet almost describe him as a mythical-type person. Figures regarding his exact wealth, properties, and other assets appear to be widely rumored and disputed.
But her starkly different outlook on publicity and self-promotion has worried her father. “He’s terrified because I’m his baby – especially with [me] revealing [my] wealth. And me being alone in the country, he’s terrified of someone kidnapping me and holding me for ransom,” she said.
“He also just doesn’t want people taking advantage of me because I have been sheltered my whole life.”
Last year, she finally decided to see-out her life-long dream of a singing career after her mother died of colon cancer. Her only prior professional music experience was a vocal cameo in Cobra Starship’s 2009 album Hot Mess – a feature she booked after meeting the band’s lead singer Gabe Saporta backstage at a show. In November, she signed her record deal with SMH and is now topping off negotiations for her reality TV pilot to be picked up by a major network. She herself sees its release as an opportunity to prove her own potential.
“People think I’m exactly like Paris Hilton, that I do nothing, I don’t work for myself, I don’t take my own money, I just spend my dad’s money, and I’m a spoiled brat. I hope they’re not right.”

Why Americans Convert to Islam (part 2)

This is part two of a five part series titled “A Christian Response to Islam in America.” Click here to read part 1.
“Should Christians Convert Muslims?” in TIME (June 30, 2003), suggested evangelicals are wrongheaded when they try to convert Muslims, but it failed to mention Muslim attempts—and success—in converting Christians. Below are some reasons why an estimated 2 million African-Americans, many of whom claim to be former Christians, have embraced Islam.
Decadence of Western Society
First, they are looking for self respect, discipline, family values, moral standards and deliverance from drugs and alcohol. According to Islam, they can change the stereotype of the young Black male on drugs, out of work and in jail. It’s a new way of life, a path not only to God, but of self-respect and dignity.
African-American women also convert because they see in Islam an emphasis on modesty, chastity and clarity of economic rights. Many had been abandoned to fend for themselves and their children because of irresponsible and faithless men. An African-American imam (mosque leader), invited to speak in my class at Columbia International University, said: “Jesus paid it all is not what American Blacks must hear!”
Islam then becomes an alternative to intrinsic immorality and corruption—symptoms of a society in the last stages of decomposition. It comes with a well-ordered prayer ritual, specific guidelines on relationships, clear male leadershiproles and family values—even a new name! Since Christianity is deemed powerless to effect social change, Islam can establish laws, control moral behavior and produce reform.
Failure by the Church
Second, converts to Islam say Christian discrimination left them disconnected and disenfranchised, but now as vice-regents in Islam, they have the distinction, purpose and empowerment that even the Civil Rights Movement did not give them. As Bruce Fields notes in Introducing Black Theology: Three Crucial Questions for the Evangelical Church, it is unfortunate, that “because the issue of racism still exists in our society, it still exists in the church” (53). He adds that “if the world does not see true unity among those who claim allegiance to Jesus Christ, the church should not be surprised when the world is unimpressed with our proclamation that the Father has sent the Son (64).
Something similar is happening to Latinos. “Islam is Luring More Latinos “in TheWashington Post quotes a young woman who had been a devout Catholic: “I felt a strong sense of belonging.” Another says she felt a “sense of sisterhood …with others who wore hijab (veil).”
Failure to Understand Islam
Third, there is widespread ignorance in regard to Islam. Muslims equate Islam with peace, but the word for peace in Arabic is “Salaam,” not “Islam.” It means “surrender or to make peace by laying down one’s arms in submission.” So to claim that Jihad means striving in the cause of Allah by personal devotion is not the whole truth. Muhammad’s call to Jihad was primarily to fight infidels (pagans), Jews and Christians. In the oldest biography on Muhammad, author Ibn Ishaq states that the Prophet conducted 29 battles and planned 39 others. And, supported by commentaries and classical writings, the Qur’an claims that Jihad is the only sure way to paradise (Qur’an, 3:169). It is to the Qur’an that Syed Qutb, ideologue and motivator of militant Islam, appeals when he builds his case for jihad (Qur’an 4:74-76; 8:38-40; 9:29-32). These passages alone, he states, suffice to justify the universal and permanent dimensions of Jihad (53-76).
Americans also need to understand that where Islam dominates, Muslims are never free to abandon Islam. Maududi, the most influential Muslim scholar in the 20th century, insists that both Qur’an and Traditions demand an apostate’s execution. He might be faulted for quoting the Qur’an (9:11-12, as it only says to fight against those who “violate their oaths,” but is on more solid footing with Bukhari’s canonized tradition: “Any person, i.e. Muslim, who has changed his religion, kill him” (Al-Bukhari, Vol. 9, p. 45).
One problem is that the sacred scriptures of Islam sends out mixed singles as to how to treat non-Muslims. On the one hand, the Qur’an admonishes Muslims to ask “People of the Book” if they have questions (10:94; 21:7, 48) and condemns violence and killing (5:32). On the other hand, the next verse says those who wage war against Allah should have their hands and feet cut off (5:33). Down a few verses it says Muslims should not take Jews and Christiansas friends (5:51). Some traditions suggest Muslims should not even salute Christians (Dawood, 41, 5186; al-Muslim, Vol. 3, 5245, 1156).
Notably, there are ample references in the sacred writings of Islam for militants to use in furthering their deadly cause, like texts that say “fight against” unbelievers (Qur’an 9:5, 29; 8:39; 4:74). Islamic traditions that predict how Jews will ultimately be exterminated are equally disturbing: “The Last Hour would not come till the Muslims fight against the Jews and the Muslims will kill them until the Jews hide themselves, and the stones and trees would speak up saying … ‘There is a Jew hiding behind me, come and kill him’” (Al-Muslim, Book 40, No. 6985).
